The ¡Èhitoyogiri¡É, a short vertical flute measuring about 33 cm, is a type of shakuhachi which is small and was popular mainly from the Muromachi period (early 14c – late 16c) to the early Edo period (early 17c – mid 19c).
The word ¡Èhitoyogiri¡É means cutting one node of a bamboo. As its name suggests, hitoyogiri is made from a single section of bamboo, but in the Muromachi period it was called "shakuhachi" exclusively.
There are various theories about its origin, but it is well known that Zen master Ikkyu of the Daitokuji school of the Rinzai sect in the Muromachi period loved to play the shakuhachi and even composed Chinese poems on it, such as "Kyounshu". It is also known that warlords of the Warring States period (Sengoku period) all treasured hitoyogiri as family heirlooms and castle treasures. It is evidenced by the hitoyogiri surviving throughout Japan, including the hitoyogiri called "nokaze" that is said to have been handed down from Nobunaga to Hideyoshi and then to Ieyasu. However, after the Edo period, the hitoyogiri gradually went into hiding due to the rise of the current shakuhachi (¡Èkomuso¡É shakuhachi with roots), but in recent years, the hitoyogiri has gradually become more visible, appearing in historical TV dramas.
